|AN UNPUBLISHED ARCHIVE OF ABBOTT HANDERSON THAYER LETTERS, WHICH ALSO CONTAINS PHOTOS, SIGNED INVITATION CARDS, AND A DRAWING; WITH AN ADDITIONAL CORRESPONDENCE OF EMMA BEACH THAYER|
Abbott H. Thayer (USA, 1849 - 1921)
Superb unknown archive consisting of 18 ALsS (to various members of the Beach family including his wife Emma), various places (New York, Monadnock, NH), 42 pages, mostly 8vo, 1890 to (approx.) 1918; with two admission cards signed-1. A Season ticket to the Nineteenth Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Artists, March 21 to May 1st, 1897 and 2. National Academy of Design, Winter Exhibition, 1908; in addition an archive of AlsS of his wife and fellow artist, Emma (Emmeline Buckingham) Beach Thayer (Am. 1850-1924) from 1860 to 1909 (app), mostly to her father, one with drawings; plus an original drawing of Emma Thayer by Abbott H.Thayer on card, a carte-de-visite of Emma Thayer inscribed on verso, “Emma B.Beach afterward Mrs. Abbott Thayer, artist”, a small photo of Emma Beach and her sister, marked on back, “Long Beach June 1889”, and a letter from a family friend relating to Gerard Thayer’s mental illness.
This archive was purchased directly from the descendents of:
MOSES YALE BEACH. (Born, Wallingford, Ct., January 15, 1800; died there, July 19, 1868). Descended from John Beach (1600-1681), an early settler of Connecticut, Moses Sperry Beach, Sr. (1775-1826) and his second wife Lucretia Yale (1758-1800) who was the granddaughter of Elihu Yale (1649-1721), the Founder of Yale University. Moses Beach was the father of Emma Beach Thayer.
Most of the Abbott Thayer letters contain items of family and historical interest but some of the content relate to his work and exhibitions. To my knowledge this archive is completely unpublished, but part may have been examined by Nelson C.White for his biography, Abbott H.Thayer, Painter and Naturalist, Hartford, 1951.
